Amarillo High girls won the big showdown with Canyon on Saturday to win the 5A Regional title and will head to the state tournament this week.

The Lady Sandies lost to Canyon in last year's regional final but took the lead early in Saturday's game and held off the 4-time defending state champion Lady Eagles.

Amarillo High will meet Temple in the state semifinals Thursday night at 8:30 p.m. at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

Nazareth and Claude girls teams will also be at the State Tournament.

The defending 1A state champion Swiftettes won the Regional tournament over the weekend and will take on Hermleigh in the state semifinals on Thursday at 10 a.m.

Claude knocked off defending state champion Panhandle for the 2A Regional championship to punch their ticket to the state tournament. Claude will face LaRue LaPoyner in the state semifinals Friday morning at 10 a.m. in San Antonio.

- Two local boys teams will play Regional Quarterfinal contests Tuesday night.

Amarillo High needed a last second basket by Nathan Betts to slip past Canutillo on Friday in the Area round. The Sandies will face El Paso Andress Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Odessa Permian High School.

Randall stunned 6th ranked El Paso Burges last Friday to move into the Regional Quarterfinals. The Raiders take on 20th ranked  El Paso Eastlake on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m. in Andrews.
