Mud is My Enemy! My Backyard Needs Serious Grass Help

I'm a single mom, I'm a homeowner, and I have two big dogs. My backyard it a disaster.

I'm far from a DIYer, I don't know what I'm doing, nor do I have a lot of extra funds to go all crazy.  However, what I have learned from these last two snows, is I need a backyard makeover.

My backyard is dirt, the last couple of droughts and having big dogs killed off my yard.  I used to have gorgeous grass back there, but I didn't water it properly and with the dogs, it died.  I was worried I couldn't afford my water bill.

So that brings us to the here and now.  The snow melted and my yard is mud, and again I have two big dogs.  My house is covered in mud.  The rug at the back door doesn't work because they don't know how to wipe their paws.

Lots of mud, mud in the carpets, mud on the couch, mud on my bed.  My vacuum is tired of the mud, my mop is tired of the mud, and my washing machine is tired of the mud.

Not only that, I have to dust all the time when it's not wet, because of the dirt.

Here I am, making plans, for Spring.  There will be a temporary fence on one side of my yard, a tiller rental, tons of grass seed, water, and fertilizer.  I will have a beautiful back yard (at least on one side) by the end of summer.  I don't care how much I have to water it.

I'm lucky to have a fella in my life who is a huge DIYer.  He knows what he's doing, so I'm ready to get down in the dirt and get this project moving.  I can't wait to get my hands dirty.  Plus, I get to play with machinery, that isn't a lawn mower.

Any advice you can share would be great.  As you can see, my yard is junk.  I don't want to be that neighbor with a scary backyard.  I want my dogs to have grass to roll around in.  I want a yard where I can actually mow grass and not weeds and dirt.
