A couple of local girls basketball players have been named to the 5-A All-State team by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Association.

Amarillo High's Sydney Tinner and Canyon's Angel Hayden made the prestigious list after outstanding seasons.

Two players from Canadian made the 3-A All-State team - Haevyn Risley and Emily Alexander. On the 2-A list is Rylee Albracht and Macalle Melton, along with Jenna Cooper of Claude and Laynee Burr of Stratford. Three Nazareth players head up the 1-A All-State team. Abby Schmucker, Allie Schulte and Cambrie Heiman are joined by Callie Crockett of McLean, and Angela Parsley of White Deer.

There were plenty of boys from the area honored as well. Amarillo High's Adam Rivera made the 5-A All-State squad. Cameron Copley of Canadian landed on the 3-A team. 2-A honorees included Marshal Johnson of Clarendon and Jace Perkins of Farwell. The 1-A team has Sterling White and Trever Phillips of Happy, along with Caluum Holmes of Shamrock and Jake Gerber of Nazareth.

- The West Texas A&M Lady Buffs are set to challenge number one ranked and undefeated Ashland University in the NCAA Women's Basketball Elite Eight in Columbus, Ohio. The Lady Buffs have overcome plenty of obstacles this season after the rugged Lone Star Conference race and then winning the South Central Region Tournament as the fourth seed.

The Eagles have dominated just about everyone they have played this season as the team leads the nation in field goal shooting at a .509 clip and are second in scoring at 93.9 points per game.

Tip off is set for 5 p.m. today.

– West Texas A&M junior guard David Chavlovich has been named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Division II South Central All-District First Team. Chavlovich has set new single-season school records in points scored (665) while holding the WT career mark for points (1,762), field goal attempts (1,3675), 3-pt field goals made (297) and 3-pt field goal attempts (802).

The Arlington native led the Lone Star Conference in scoring this season, averaging 20.2 points per game.

- Top seed UConn easily moved into the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Women's Basketball Tournament with a 94-64 win over Syracuse. Fellow number-one seed Baylor is going to the Sweet 16 for the ninth year in a row after an 86-46 win over California. The upset of the night was 2nd seed Duke losing to 10th seed Oregon 74-65.

- Two of the leaders in District 3-5A baseball meet today as Amarillo High hosts Canyon.  Both teams are 2-0 in district play.  Randall is at home against Caprock, Palo Duro hosts Dumas and Hereford is at Plainview.

Tascosa tries to even its District 2 6-A record today against Midland High.  The Rebels are 1-2 in district play while the Bulldgos are 2-1.
