For Second Time This Week Earthquake Rocks Texas Panhandle From Lubbock To Amarillo
Earlier this week on July 22, a 4.9-magnitude earthquake rattled parts of the Lone Star State. That earthquake was felt from Lubbock all the way north to Amarillo. This morning, an earthquake shook parts of the same area for the second time in a week.
Earthquake Rattles The Texas Panhandle For Second Time In One Week
The first earthquake this week happened between Snyder and Roby, Texas. It registered at 4.9-magnitude and was felt as far north as Amarillo. The earthquake that took place this morning happened in pretty much the exact same area near Snyder, and once again was felt as far north as Yellow City.
The quake happened at around 9:28 AM, according to the United States Geological Survey website. According to the USGS, it was a 5.1-magnitude earthquake. People in Amarillo and Canyon flocked to social media to see if anyone else had felt the ground move.
It is a little unsettling to think that the same general area could produce an earthquake twice in one week. Especially if people as far away as Amarillo and Canyon are saying they could feel it. What the heck is going on?
What Are The Strongest Earthquakes In Texas History?
Earthquakes aren't anything new to the Lone Star State. We have a long history with the Earth shaking. The strongest earthquake on record in Texas happened in 1921 in Valentine, Texas. It registered at 6.5 magnitude. The earthquake this morning is the 7th strongest in Texas history.
Hopefully, things will settle down as we head into the weekend.
