WT Basketball Teams Sweep LSC Tournament Titles
West Texas A&M reigns supreme in Lone Star Conference basketball, sweeping the women’s and men’s LSC Tournament titles in Frisco on Sunday.
The Lady Buffs won their league-leading 14th LSC Tournament Title with an 80-66 victory over No. 5 seed Tarleton State.
Megan Gamble, who was named tournament MVP, paced the Lady Buffs all weekend, especially on Sunday, when she scored 14 points, hit all three of her 3-point attempts and had three steals. Averaging 4.3 points per game entering the tournament, Gamble had not scored in double figures all season but finished over 10 in each of the three tournament games. She was joined on the all-tournament team by Lexy Hightower, who scored 15 points on Sunday, and Tiana Parker, who had eight points and six blocks.
The WT men’s team won its first LSC Tournament title since 2006. The Buffs erased an 11 point deficit and then held off UT-Permian Basin 80-76 to win the school’s 7th men’s tournament title. In a battle between the top two seeds, WT made crucial plays down the stretch, including a huge 3-pointer from David Chavlovich, who was named the tournament’s MVP. The Buffs’ Jordan Evans also made the All-Tournament team. Evans and Chavlovich each had 21 points in yesterday’s win.
Now its on to NCAA playoffs for both teams.
The Lady Buffs will play in Lubbock after Lubbock Christian was named the top seed for the women’s South Central Region Tournament. The Lady Buffs will be the 2nd seed take on the 7th seed Arkansas-Fort Smith in the opening round.
The WT men’s team will host the South Central Region and will take on Colorado School of Mines in the opener later this week.
