Venom’s Johnson Win League Honor

In four weeks of the season, an Amarillo Venom player has won player of the week honors three times.  This week, it’s receiver Raymond Johnson, Jr.

Johnson is the Champions Indoor Football Offensive Player of the Week after he caught the game-winning touchdown pass with 1-second left in the Venom’s 50-49 win at Duke City last weekend. He also had two other touchdown receptions and seven catches overall for 68 yards.

The undefeated Venom play at the Dallas Marshals Saturday night.

- Amarillo High boys and Canyon girls won team titles Thursday at the District 3-5A track and field meet held at Randall High.  The teams endured wind gusts over 40 mph during the event.

The Sandies dominated on the boys side, defeating 2^nd place Palo Duro by 70 points.  The girls race was closer with Canyon outdistancing 2^nd place Amarillo High by 30 points.

The top 4 individuals qualified for the Area Track and Field Meet next week. Some of the top individual performances included Canyon’s Mackenzie Grimes, who won three gold medals and Amarillo High’s Nikki Ezbon, who won four golds during the meet. Amarillo High’s Cooper Newsome and Alex Loving both took three gold medals on the boys side.

- The top two teams in the District 3-5A baseball race meet again today.  The Amarillo Sandies outslugged the Randall Raiders 14-11 on Tuesday at Randall to stay perfect in district play and handing the Raiders their first district loss. Today’s matchup begins at 5 p.m. at Sandie Field.

– The West Texas A&M baseball team will have to wait a little longer to return to Wilder Park as the weekend series against Cameron has been altered due to the potential for extremely high winds.

The Buffs and Aggies now will play a single game Saturday evening beginning at 7 p.m., followed by a doubleheader Sunday at 4 p.m. and a single game Monday at 1 p.m.

- The WT softball team’s schedule so far has not been changed.  The Lady Buffs are scheduled to host Cameron beginning tonight at 6 p.m. at Shaeffer Park with a doubleheader tomorrow.  It will be military appreciation weekend.

- West Texas A&M football coach Hunter Hughes gets another chance to look at his players in a game setting today as the team holds its second scrimming of the spring season. The contest is at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium at 6 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
