The Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum is now delving into the world of mythical creatures. Did mythical creatures once call the Texas Panhandle home?

A new exhibit called Giants, Dragons & Unicorns: The World of Mythic Creatures will trace the natural and cultural roots of some of the world’s most enduring mythic creatures.

The exhibit is organized by the American Museum of Natural History in New York. They have put together unique cultural objects to show how people see and depict mythical creatures. The exhibit will include different models and fossils of different animals and how they might have been mistaken for something mythical.

The exhibit will feature information about sea monsters.

It will feature a model of a Kraken and the giant tentacles that rise of from the floor. It will also have an interactive station where you can learn about how real sea animals could have been mistaken for sea monsters.

Plus a chance to learn about mermaids.

I think mermaids are some of the most popular types of mythical creatures (other than unicorns, and dragons) The exhibit will include this sculpture of Mami Wata, a powerful African water spirit. Plus carvings of Sedna, from the stories of the Inuit people of Canada and Greenland. The exhibit will feature a recreation of the Feejee mermaid that was inspired by P.T. Barnum's hoax that joined a monkey skeleton with sculpture.

We cannot forget about the dragons.

The exhibit will tell stores from Asia where dragons ascend from bodies of water to the sky. European stories speak of dragons who kill people with their breath or breath fire. See a 17th-century European natural history book and what it says about dragons. Experience a wooden carving of the Aztec Quetzalcoatl. See what the head of a Chinese parade dragon looks like and watch a video of the dragon dance during the Lunar New Year. Oh, and you'll have a chance to take a picture with three dragons.

Don't worry you'll learn about unicorns, giants, and griffins as well.

“This exhibition is a great pairing with our Objects of Enchantment exhibition which opened earlier this year. This gives PPHM a chance to combine a traveling exhibition along with items from our permanent collection. We are able to relate mythic creatures in everyday objects from prehistory to today,” said Heather Friemel, Associate Director of the Panhandle-Plains Historical Museum

This will be an exhibit for the entire family to enjoy. The exhibit will be featured at the PPHM through March 25, 2023.
