Not the Kind of Farm I Expected to Find in the Texas Panhandle
We have all sorts of farms and ranches here in the Texas Panhandle. We grow all sorts of crops. We raise all sorts of animals. Texas is good for that. When I was looking around the area there was one farm I wasn't really expecting. Oh, but I am glad that I found it.
It seems if you take a trip to Spearman you can visit an actual windmill farm. OK, maybe it's classified as more of a park but cool nonetheless. JB Buchanan formerly of Spearman had a ranch where he collected windmills. They were his passion. He collected these windmills for decades.
Back in 1999, JB's son, who was the mayor of Spearman, helped get all of these windmills moved to their present home. Five acres of windmill heaven. You can find them on the southwest edge of Spearman. They are located on the east side of Highway 207.
This is one of those pleasant roadside attractions. I mean how often do you see so many windmills in so many places? Think of it as the Cadillac Ranch but with windmills. No, you can't spray paint them. Don't even try.
Even though JB Buchanan passed away back in 2003 a part of him goes on every time someone stops and enjoys his life's work. I mean JB was still climbing windmills into his nineties. So I mean they really were his passion.
Have you seen the windmills on your trip through Spearman?
