A piece of Amarillo history is a pile of rubble. If you have traveled I-27 and Bell or used the access road at I-40 and Bell going north, then you have noticed a graffiti-covered building sitting there, crumbling.

What Used to Stand at 7717 Canyon Drive

This building at 7717 Canyon Drive was built in 1976, and it has been many things in its lifetime. While most have grown up seeing this empty, rotting building, many remember it for other things.

For many, it was the second location of Myers Drumstick, a chicken restaurant that was open in Amarillo in the '70s and '80s. It was also once an event center named The Gathering Place. However, it is now gone.

Why the City Condemned the Building

According to PRAD, the property is owned by Texas 5G LTD and listed for use as a clubhouse. Back on December 18, 2025, the City of Amarillo's Condemnation Appeals Commission held a hearing for multiple properties, and one of those properties was 7717 Canyon Drive. The meeting discussed condemning and removing the structure on the property.

What the Owner Told the Commission

At the hearing, the owner/partner of the property, Lynn McClure, spoke and told the commission that demolition was planned and underway. The commission voted 3-0 to approve the resolution under Option II.

What's Next for the Property

It seems that demolition has happened. As for what will become of the property, it may continue to sit empty like the property it is sandwiched between, owned by Attebury Elevators.
