It’s a Battle of Orange and Blue for the Final Playoff Spot
Better buckle up for this season. Why? Because 5A-1 Region I District 2 is shaping up to be a very competitive bracket. Teams like the Tascosa Rebels, who are in 1st place sitting at a 8-1 record 5-0 in district, or the second-place Amarillo High Sandies, who are 8-2 on the season 5-1 in district.
Both of these teams have already secured their spot in the playoffs with Lubbock's Coronado High School Mustangs most likely taking the 3rd playoff spot with a 4-4 record 3-1 in district.
But who is set to take the 4th and final playoff spot?
Dons, Longhorns, or Plainsmen
The contenders for the final spot comes down between three teams: the Palo Duro Dons, Caprock Longhorns, or Lubbock's Monterey High School Plainsmen.
In my opinion, with the Mustangs needing just one more win to take the 3rd playoff spot and the Mustangs playing the Plainsmen on Friday night--I'm going go ahead and make a call that Mustangs will beat the Plainsmen. This will knocking the Plainsmen out of the playoffs and leave the Dons and Longhorns to battle it out for the final spot.
And just guess who is set to play each other Friday night? The Palo Duro Dons and The Caprock Longhorns.
Dons Vs. Longhorns
This game is also going to be a very electric game to watch for two reasons. The first reason is that it will determine who will get the last play off spot. Second, it's Hell Week or "Spirit Week", as some people like to call it. Either way, this game is going to be one heck of a match up between these two teams, especially when you look at the fact that both teams are on the struggle bus right now.
The Struggle Bus
Let's take a look at the Dons first. The Dons haven't played like they were since September 16th granted they did start district play the following week against Tascosa. And ever since then they have been struggling to come back around to playing like they used. But there is light at the end of the tunnel and I noticed it last week when the Dons were playing the Sandies. Yes they might of lost 30-14 but they held the Sandies down 21-14 until the 4th quarter so if they can just add some gas to the offense then they have going they should be a power house to reckon with. Now time to look at the Longhorns and as someone who graduated there in 2017 the only say is this reminds of the 2014 and 2015 seasons where y'all still trying to find who y'all where but y'all did find your self in 2016 and finish with a 8-3 record. Both of these teams have the potential to win and take the final playoff spot. Either way this game is going to be a good one to watch.
