Buffs Defense Leads Way in Win
A strong defensive performance with two big interceptions and ten points off two UT Permian Basin miscues, sparked West Texas A&M to a 17-6 victory Saturday afternoon at Kimbrough Memorial Stadium.
Junior Isaiah Barnett had both of the Buffs' interceptions of Falcon's QB Kameron Mathis, who is a Bushland native. Barnett and junior Lance Hyder paced the Buffs with eight tackles each, while Barnett had the two picks and Hyder had 1.5 sacks and one tackle for loss. Senior LSC Defensive Player of the Week Daelin Young had six tackles with two sacks and three tackles for loss for 22 yards.
WT was held to 222 yards of offense, with 140 through the air and only 82 on the ground.
The Buffaloes improved to 2-1 on the season and won their conference opener.
WT will play its first road game this Saturday at Tarleton State.
- Texas Tech won at home on Saturday. The Red Raiders edged Arizona State 52-45 to improve to 2-0.
- The Amarillo Bulls are headed to the NAHL Showcase Tournament this week after starting the season with a 5-3 win over Odessa in the season opener on Saturday.
- Trevor Siemian tied a career high with four touchdown passes and the Denver Broncos held Ezekiel Elliott to the worst game of his career - 8 yards on nine carries - in a 42-17 blowout of the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday in a game that included an hour-long lightning delay.
The Cowboys looked nothing like the team that dominated the Giants in their opener. They were seeking their first win in Denver since 1992 and instead lost to the Broncos for the sixth straight time.
Siemian threw scoring strikes of 10 and 6 yards to Emmanuel Sanders as the Broncos built a 21-10 halftime lead.
