I'll be the first to admit I've been nervous the past few days since all the shootings took place in North Amarillo. There's not a lot of new information out and Amarillo Police still are on the lookout for a suspect with very little to go on other than a vague vehicle description.

What's gotten me in the past day is all the folks hitting me up telling me I should monitor online police scanners and neighborhood groups lighting up with the classic "Did you hear gunshots?" posts which if you live in the rural areas of the county are usually fireworks and then there are those who chime in and say APD can't handle this because of insert whatever statistic about low manpower.

The scanner thing gets to me. I have previous experience in past markets where I have been in newsrooms with police and fire radios going off all the time and in those environments the departments are nice enough to share their "codes" and lingo so we know what's worth listening to and what is just mundane "im going to lunch" radio calls for the purposes of reporting traffic and accidents or news reports. Listening to those here in Amarillo won't really do much for you other than hearing where the responders are and without this understanding all you end up doing is working yourself up for nothing. or worse... curious folks go out to look and just get in the way and possibly making things worse.

APD Checks in

Amarillo Police checked in on Facebook asking folks to continue with leads because like you and me they want to get this guy off the streets. As for manpower. Sure it's no secret APD is understaffed... but to be fair so is every other city agency in Amarillo. for crying out loud just a few weeks back we were talking about funding parks. Staffing issues aside APD is going to get their guy. They also have the advantage of being able to ask Potter County to help out along with Randall should things move into that county. and that's just the beginning of the agencies that can help. It's a non issue.

What we need to do is continue to watch out. Don't listen to the static. if it comes from law enforcement here it's what we need to know. and if it doesn't just take it with a grain of salt. Be vigilant and report what you see if it doesn't look right.
