The Amarillo Zoo invites you out to celebrate World Lion Day.  It's a day to honor the amazing species.

The lion used to roam all across the world, but over the last 50 years they have lost over 80% of their range.  The lion seems to slowly be disappearing.  Studies have show that the lion exists in 67 areas, but only 9 countries have over 1000 of the lion.  Since 2002 five countries are believe to have lost their entire population.  To put it in perspective, in 1975 Africa had about 250,000 lions.  Today, they estimate over 25,000.  That's an enormous decline and it's a scary thought that a great creature like the lion could become extinct.

Things that threaten the lion:

  • Loss of habitat
  • Loss of prey
  • Human conflict
  • Trophy Hunting practices
  • Disease
  • Inbreeding
  • Poaching

Come learn all about the lion and how you can help make sure they don't become extinct
