Go Outside And Play Music On The Porch In Upcoming Global Event

As the saying goes, you learn something new everyday. Today, I learned that there is a day set aside, globally, for people to go outside and play music on the porch. It's appropriately titled "Play Music On The Porch Day" and it's the last Saturday of August every year.

This year it's on August 29.

It started with the question, "What if we just stopped everything and just listened to the music" on one day a year. Soon, the idea took off and by 2018 there were musicians all over the world participating.

To participate, you just go outside and play some music on the porch. You're encouraged to upload a video and add #playmusicontheporchday to the post on social media.

We all remember the viral videos of neighborhoods filled with music during quarantine. Sing-a-longs and performances from apartment balconies became a way for people to stay connected.

Those moments are what this event is all about. Music bringing us all together.

I'm putting this on my calendar, and I'm planning on participating. Some of my fondest memories growing up are learning to play boogie-woogie and old Hank Williams tunes from my grandfather on the front porch of his house.

With everything going on in the world today, with everything that's available to divide us and turn us against each other, a global event like this can help us take the edge off for a minute.
