It was a dominating performance by Texas Panhandle girls basketball teams at the UIL State Tournament in San Antonio on Thursday.

Canyon in Class 5A, Canadian in 3A and Nazareth in 1A all won state semifinal games by large margins and will play for state titles on Saturday.

The 3-time defending state champion Lady Eagles rolled past Barbers Hill 66-39 in a game that was never close. Canyon raced out to a 26-8 first quarter lead and led 43-18 by halftime. Senior Angel Hayden poured in 29 points as the Lady Eagles improved to 30-3. Canyon will face Mansfield Timberview for the 5A state championship on Saturday at 3 p.m. Canyon is gunning for the 19th state title in school history. The game can be heard

Canadian's Haven Risley hit for 22 points and the Lady Wildcats had no trouble with Goliad, winning 76-34. Canadian will play Buffalo for the 3A crown Saturday at 10 a.m.

Nazareth also won big, 63-31 over Slocum in the 1A state semifinals. The Swiftettes were led by Cambrie Heiman with 17 points. Naz will meet Dodd City in the championship Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m., looking for their 21st state championship.

On Friday in San Antonio, Panhandle girls take on Woden in the 2A semifinals, beginning at 10 a.m.

-- While local boys high school basketball teams are all out of the playoffs, several area schools are playing in regional tournaments today. Canadian boys meet Nocona tonight in the 3A Regional in Midland. In 2A, Clarendon faces Anthony at 2:30 p.m. today at SPC in Levelland, Nazareth plays New Home and Happy battles Jayton tonight in Levelland.

-- West Texas A&M basketball teams will be on the court in Allen, Texas today in the Lone Star Conference Tournament.

The 3rd seeded Lady Buffs take on 6th seed Texas Women's University at noon today. The teams met twice in the regular season with each winning on their home court. The 3rd seeded WT men's team will meet 6th seed Texas A&M-Kingsville at 2:30 this afternoon. The teams also split their two regular season meetings, but the Buffs will play without their leading scorer David Chavlovich, who must sit out the game after he picked up his
third technical foul of the season in the Buffs last game.

Both WT games can be heard live on 98.7 Jack-FM.

Yesterday in the first round of the LSC Women's tournament, Angelo State beat Cameron 88-71 and 8th seed Kingsville stunned regular-season champ and top seed Eastern New Mexico 69-67.

In men's games, #7 seed Angelo State knocked off 2nd seed Tarleton State in OT 85-82. Top seed UTPB beat Midwestern State 81-70.

-- The #6 WT softball team has a Lone Star Conference series starting tonight at Tarleton State. The Lady Buffs are 17-2 on the season and 3-0 in the LSC. The Texanns are 3-3 in conference play.

-- The 23rd ranked Buffaloes baseball team also faces Tarleton State in a weekend series to start off Lone Star Conference play. The Buffs are coming of their first loss of the season in their last outing, but are 9-1 overall. The Texans are ranked 15th with a 10-2 mark.

-- The Amarillo Bulls have a tough assignment this weekend as they meet the South Division leader in the NAHL, Lone Star, for three straight road games.

-- The Big 12 women's basketball tournament begins today in Oklahoma City. Texas Tech is the 8th seed and will face 9th seed TCU at 6 p.m. The winner will move on to play top seed Baylor tomorrow.

-- All three Texas NBA teams were off last night. Tonight's schedule has Dallas hosting Memphis and San Antonio is at New Orleans.

Among the games last night, Golden State lost their first game playing without Kevin Durant, who is out with a knee injury. The Warrior lost to Chicago 94-87. Oklahoma City also lost, falling to Portland 114-109.
