It didn't take long for Democrats to voice their distaste for Republican Senator Ted Cruz after he voiced his opposition to certifying the 2020 Presidential Election in favor of Joe Biden.

Senator Cruz made his case Wednesday, January 6th at the Capitol, which cam e under siege by protesters, that many Republicans had doubts about the legitimacy of the election.

Congress’ certification of 2020 election results would be put on hold, however, as hundreds of Pro-Trump protesters made their way inside the Capitol. One woman was shot and killed by Capitol police, and three others died from medical emergencies which have not yet been explained. On Thursday, Jan. 7th, Capitol police officer Brian Sicknick died from injuries he sustained during the riot.

However, Cruz has not changed his mind about his opposition to the election results, saying on Twitter that protesters needed to stop being violent. That wasn't enough for congressman and fellow Texan Julian Castro, who said on Twitter that Cruz should resign for the position he took, even listing Cruz and other Republicans as inciters of the riot.

Texas Democrat Beto O'Rourke also called for Cruz to resign and accused the Senator’s behavior of helping to, "inspire these terrorists and their attempted coup." In response, Cruz asked O’Rourke to stop spreading division, hatred, and "contempt for half of the country that disagrees with you."

Representative of New York's 14th congressional district Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who has made a name for herself over recent years as a progressive firebrand, has also called for Cruz to step down, accusing him of trying to fundraise while the Capitol riot was still ongoing. (Editor's note: The Independent reported that both Cruz and fellow Republican senator Josh Hawley of Missouri did, in fact, send out fundraising emails just before a pro-Trump mob infiltrated the U.S. Capitol building.)

Cruz called Ocasio-Cortez a liar and said he told his staff to halt all fundraising efforts as soon as he learned of the riot.

Texas Democrats have also called for the impeachment of President Donald Trump even though his term is set to expire in less than two weeks. Some Democrats have even called on Vice President Mike Pence to move forward on invoking the 25th Amendment to deem President Trump unfit to hold his office, in which case Vice President Pence would act as President until President-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated on January 20th, 2021.
