The Power Outages in Texas go far beyond just affecting us, animals are also feeling the effects. Several monkeys, some lemurs, a chimpanzee, and an undisclosed amount of birds died when a San Antonio-area wildlife sanctuary lost power early Monday morning.

Primarily Primates is a non-profit wildlife sanctuary in San Antonio(Bexar County) that provides lifetime care for over 300 animals, mostly primates, including 33 chimpanzees.  All of the animals at Primarily Primates were exploited and then discarded by the research and entertainment industries as well as pets that came from the exotic pet trade.

The executive director of Primarily Primates, Brooke Chavez told the San Antonio Express-News that the 'power went out about 6 a.m. Monday at the 70-acre sanctuary that housed more than 400 primates.'

Chavez realized their efforts were futile. The 12 staff members and volunteers began to evacuate and shepherd the animals into carriers to transport them to the San Antonio Zoo and another sanctuary near the Oklahoma border.  It was at that point that Chavez and her staff began to find dead animals throughout the facility.

This story really hurts my heart.

Many of the animals led limited, dismal lives, and many were kept alone in small cages prior to coming to PPI. Here they are housed in compatible groups and get to live the rest of their lives with dignity and can make choices about how they want to spend their days.
