The visit is to celebrate the completion of 450 miles of new border wall in the region. while not confirmed, Local TV outlet KVEO reports that the Secret Service have met with officials in Harlingen and McAllen officials for security details. The trip comes as officials in congress look to impeach President Trump.
US Customs and border protection acting director Mark Morgan has stated the agency is trying to award contracts for the completion of another 300 miles before January 19th. While the wall was initially promised to be paid for by Mexico, so far the construction has cost American taxpayers a little over $11 Billion dollars.
Opponents of the wall have citied environmental concerns, cost, steering money from the department of defense and an ineffectiveness to target the root cause of illegal immigration.
