NASA Develops Material That Could Be None More Black

Friday is Nigel Tufnel Day.  It's the day that truly goes to 11.  And NASA has created a material that can get none more black.

NASA engineers have created a coating that absorbs more than 99% of the ultraviolet, visible, infrared and far-infrared light that hits it.  This is important stuff and will change our understanding of the universe.

Amongst the many other uses and needs for an ultra black material one very important one is in photography and especially astronomy.  Generally black paint is used to absorb stray light in photographic equipment.  Black surfaces are also needed to filter out light for telescopes.  Current technology requires telescopes to be supercooled to absorb more light, something that is practically impossible for space based observatories.  The  new black coating alone will improve light gathering abilities of telescopes and expand the distance of light observed and resolution of it.
