October is closing in on us, and so are all of the Oktoberfest celebrations. You can't go wrong with a holiday that celebrates beer.

How Oktoberfest Started

Oktoberfest got its start in Munich, Germany, on October 12, 1810. It was a wedding celebration for Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria and Princess Therese von Sachsen-Hildburghausen.

Since those sacred vows, it has turned into a beer festival and fair that has expanded from country to country and city to city. Many places around the world celebrate their own version of Oktoberfest.

It's definitely an excuse to drink lots of German beer and enjoy massive amounts of German food.

Why Lederhosen Wasn't Part of the Original Celebration

Since the original Oktoberfest was a royal wedding, lederhosen was not part of the attire. Lederhosen was workwear worn by peasants. According to Bavaria Trachten, lederhosen was revived in the 1880s, not as workwear but as a costume to preserve Bavarian history.
