Aisles of Misfortune: The Curse of Another Amarillo Building
Amarillo has been blessed with multiple locations to grocery shop. We have had multiple grocery chains in our great city over the years.
However, there is a building in Amarillo, that has a grocery store curse. It seems that any grocery store that inhabits this building, won't make it in the long run.
If you're familiar with the cursed building series, you know what I mean by cursed buildings. For those that are new, let me preface this, when we say cursed, it doesn't mean haunted or evil spirits, it just means this particular building or area has just had many businesses open and close.
Today's Cursed Building is 5811 S Western St
This building has been home to multiple grocery stores.
Homeland
Homeland was a grocery store in the 1990s that had great deals. They were one of the first grocery stores to have a savings card. Homeland had the carrots, "a whole crop of reasons to shop." The company decided to close many of its stores in 2001. They closed at least 4 in Amarillo including this location.
Panhandle Salvage
Panhandle Salvage was created to sell off the excess or damaged merchandise from Affiliated Foods. It was once only for employees but eventually opened to the public. You could get grocery items extremely cheap. They would sometimes sell milk for $1 per gallon. You could get a full cart of groceries for $20. It was announced the store would close in September 2018.
Fiesta Foods Cost Plus
In April 2019, Fiesta Foods opened in this location giving Amarillo another Fiesta Foods location. It offered groceries at cost plus 10%. However, it didn't last long and it closed a year later in 2020.
Market 33
Market 33 opened in Amarillo in 2020. They remodeled and updated the building, and included a beer and wine tasting room. Customers could shop while enjoying a beverage. However, it was announced that Market 33 would be closing the store by July 30th.
What's the future of this building? Will another grocery store move in? Will they bring back a Panhandle Salvage-type store? It's a great neighborhood but for some reason, the stores have have inhabited this building, have not lasted. Unfortunately, many of the businesses that called this shopping center home, have closed. Hopefully, the next tenant will bring a new life to this area.
