Amarillo has an animal overpopulation problem.

Animal Management and Welfare addressed the city council last night with their plan to address the issue.  During the presentation, the department said they consistently see over 13,000 animals each year at the shelter. That’s twice as much as Waco and a little lower the Austin’s intake.

Animal Management & Welfare said they are looking at a new spay and neuter program.  They also recommend a new breeding ordinance.  That would require anyone within the city limits to obtain a permit for any pregnant animals, whether intentional or not.

It is hoped this will lead to both a reduced pet population with euthanizing as many animals.

Animal Management & Welfare is also asking the public to adopt a rescue animal from the shelter instead of buying new.
