Who would have thought that Amarillo is internationally famous?

If you travel anywhere in the UK and say - "I am from Amarillo", there is a good chance that people older than 20 will know where you are talking about. Tony Christie is an English musician, singer, and actor. In the early 70s, he released a song called "Amarillo".

The lyrics included references to our city and the Texas Sky. The best part to me is that he rhymes Amarillo with the word pillow...

When the day is dawnin'
On a Texas Sunday mornin'
How I long to be there
With Marie who's waitin' for me there
Ev'ry lonely city where I hang my hat
Ain't as half as pretty as where my baby's at
Is this the way to Amarillo?
Ev'ry night I've been huggin' my pillow
Dreamin' dreams of Amarillo
And sweet Marie who waits for me
Show me the way to Amarillo

It was wildly popular in England and across the U.K. it remained in the charts for many years and still is played in clubs for a good old crowd pleaser.

If I were the Sod Poodles, The Venom, or any other sports team I would be cranking this song at every game!
