I have a tendency to want to do DIY things in my home, so I started researching how to build a fish pond.  The great thing about it is it is relatively easy to do.

First of all, choose where you want to put your pond.

The site of your pond will need electricity within 10 feet because the pond will have pumps.  Also, it will need to be near your water faucet for easier filling.   Plus, it needs to be in an area that gets 5-6 hours of sunlight per day.   You'll also need a good pump and filtration system to keep your pond healthy.

You might consider a larger pond, rather than a small pond, they are easier when it comes to the upkeep.

Call 4-1-1 before you dig to make sure you are not digging near underground power lines.

Don't put your pond near trees or on a slope.

Did a hole for your pond.

Ponds need to be at least 2-4 ft deep depending on the type of fish you want to have in your pond.  You'll need to place the pond at least one foot below the frost line.

Once that is dug you'll need to put in underlayment and a liner inside the hole.  Make sure it is all leveled.   Then fill the pond.  It's best to let the pond sit for about 3 days.

When it comes to the decor surrounding your pond, pavers and rocks are great additions.  Plus you might consider creating a waterfall in your pond for an added visual.  Plus, it helps the water to circulate.

Next, figure out what kind of life you want in your pond.  What type of fish and what type of plants.

According to fishkeepingforever.com, the minimum pond size for koi is 1000 gallons and this will only accommodate 4-5 fish.

Goldfish are a great option for smaller ponds but remember not to overcrowd.

When it comes to plants for your pond water lilies, lotuses, irises, water hyacinth, and water lettuce are some great plants.  Not only do they look good they help oxygenate the water. Just make sure you check what plants will survive in our climate, and what plants are allowed.

Depending on the size of your pond and what you plan to have in your pond, the average cost is anywhere from $300 - $5000.
