An auto burglary suspect attempted to run over two police officers, was tracked via a stolen cell phone and eventually evaded police yesterday morning.

Around 8am Tuesday an officer took a report of a stolen cellphone in an auto burglary in the 7100 block of Bayswater.  The victim has installed theft prevention software on the phone and was tracking it's movements when police arrived.  Officers responded to the 800 block of South Alabama where the phone was reporting its location.

A running 2003 Toyota was in the driveway.  As officers approached the driver of the vehicle the suspect put the car in reverse and tried to back over the officers while fleeing.  Neither officer was hurt.

Officers then determined the Toyota was stolen on September 24th.  Instead of pursuing the suspect, officers were able to track the stolen car via the cellphone and attempted to stop the vehicle several times.  Each time officers backed off the pursuit for the safety of the public.

Eventually the suspect tossed the phone out of the car.  Even with the help of the DPS helicopter and several officers actively searching, they were unable to locate the suspect.

The driver was a white male with brown hair and was accompanied by a female suspect.

In the last two weeks the APD has responded to 87 auto burglaries.
