I swear, it seems we can't go a day in Amarillo without there being a senselessly violent crime being committed.

Yesterday, August 18th another one happened, and for what?

Shereena (Byington) Webster was the victim of an absolutely senseless murder. The suspect is an ex-boyfriend of hers.

I'm not here to focus on the suspect, he doesn't need to be glorified. I'm here to focus on Shereena, who by all accounts was a good person who was doing a lot of good in the world.

Shereena was a teacher in Amarillo. She spent some time at Oak Dale Elementary and was most recently Instructional Support at Region 16 Education Service Center. She won numerous awards as a teacher, including the "Teacher on the Rise" award from United and Mrs. Baird's Bread back in 2016. By all accounts, she was very good at her job and made an impact on a lot of kids' lives.

She was a softball player in some of her spare time, playing competitive recreational softball. In fact, one of my assistant coaches on one of my son's baseball teams played ball with her. He called her a "true sweetheart".

Through all of that, she was a devoted mother to her young daughter, Oaklynn. This is the saddest part of the story. A child is now without her mother at far too young of an age. There is nothing worth taking a mother away from their child. Literally, no reason in the world is big enough to do that. Selfishness at the highest level.

A benefit co-ed softball tournament is being organized as we speak for a life taken too soon. The tournament will be September 10-11. I will update with the location and how to signup for the tournament once I received that information.

Say You're From Amarillo Without Saying You're From Amarillo

Amarillo is a pretty quirky place. We've got the Big Texan, the weird signs, and (obviously) the famed Cadillac Ranch. But more than that, there's a distinct culture of close-knit community, eccentrics, a thriving arts scene, and much more.

The point is, living in Amarillo is a unique experience. Because of that, it's really pretty easy to tell who's a native or a long-time resident. And I can prove it.

Here's a couple of ways you can say you're from Amarillo.....without saying you're from Amarillo.

Traffic stinks.

These intersections stink harder.

Don't hesitate to sound off if we missed any. We're happy to add more Amarillo collision hotspots to this list of shame.
