Amarillo Has Some Very Interesting and Weird Street Names
Do you ever wonder how streets are named and how they come up with their names? Amarillo is filled with all sorts of weird street names.
There are areas of town that have themes. Lonesome Dove division, yep all the streets are named after characters in the movie. Strawberry Fields, it's all street names of Beatle songs. There's an area where all the streets are named after Ivy League Schools. Downtown Amarillo is all Presidents' names.
I was scrolling and looking around at different street names and these are the ones that just hit me as weird.
Breuk is a dutch word that means break or breakage, but it's also a surname. I'm guessing this road west of VFW Road near Sundown Ln was named after a family with the last name Breuk.
I did a little research and couldn't seem to find what Lufrank was named after, it's possible a couple took both their names and combined them, or it's a surname. I found a French bakery named LuFrank and a dog's Instagram, but that's about it.
I thought this was weird just because of how it is spelled. Hey, I learned something today, a Yaupon is a holly plant that is used as hedges in landscaping. It's located near de Zavala Middle School and the streets around it are plant names as well, so this fit in.
Since we just talked about plants, I thought it was funny that a street was named after a type of grass. But then again, a landscaping business is located on the road.
I just thought this sounded funny, but it's actually a castle in Yorkshire, England, plus it's also located in the Colonies, and some of these houses are as big as castles.
Euclid was a greek mathematician who is known as the father of geometry. It's possible this street was named after him or descendants who have the surname Euclid.
I just find this one weird because stay with me here, I can hear the conversation in my head:
Person 1: "What street do you live on?"
Person 2: "Nevermind"
Person 1: Slightly offended, "OK"
Person 2: "No, Nevermind"
Person 1: "I get it you don't want to tell me."
Person 2: "No, I live on Nevermind, that's the name of the street."
Person 1: relaxes, giggles a little, and says, "Ohhhh, sorry."
I found a few of the street names in Amarillo and outside of Amarillo weird. I know there are a ton more to see and we'll share those later.
