So we have a cold front moving in this weekend. It's supposed to give us some nice sunny days in the upper 70s, but we'll be in the low 50s at night time. You know what that means, right?

TIme to pull out the ol' recipe book because nothing pairs up better with a cold front than a hot meal. In fact, i'll help you out a little. Here's three recipes you can try without breaking the bank--they're all under $25.

Ground Beef Stew

For this Stew recipe you will need

  • 1 pound of 80% lean ground beef with the average being $5.67
  • 1 yellow onion with the average cost being 55 cents
  • 1 pound of potatoes with the average cost for a 5 pound bag being $3.48
  • 1/2 a can of sliced carrots with the average cost for a can being 98 cents
  • 3 cups of beef stock with the average cost being $2.85
  • 4 tablespoons of all-purpose flour with the average cost for a 2 pound bag being $1.98
  • 1/4 cold water
  • salt and pepper

The total cost comes out to $15.51 and gives you about 4 servings with a total cook time of 35 minutes. And the only real prep that has to be done except washing all the vegetables is chopping up your onion and peeling and cut up the potatoes. But you don't have to peel your potatoes just cut them up.

  1. Place meat and onion in deep skillet and cook until the onion is translucent and meat is no longer pink.
  2. Drain the grease and add in your potatoes, carrots and beef stock.
  3. Cover the pan, turn down your heat and cook until the vegetables are tender.
  4. In a small bowl combine your flour and cold water and stir until smooth
  5. once the vegetables are tender mix in your flour water mixture for about 2 minutes then add salt and pepper to your liking.
  6. enjoy.

Chicken Noodle Soup

For this recipe you will need

  • 1 whole chicken ($6.32)
  • 12 cups of water
  • 1/2 a can of carrots ($0.98)
  • 1 cup of chopped celery ($1.46)
  • 1 yellow onion ($0.55)
  • 1 bag of wide egg noodles ($2.07)
  • 3 ounces of chicken stock ($2.85)

The total cost for this recipe comes out to $14.23 and has about 10 to 12 servings the only down side is it takes about 1 hour and 20 minutes to cook. But for a home cooked meal under 15 dollars and gives plenty of servings I'm okay with the wait time.

  1. place the chicken and water in a large pot and simmer, covered, for a hour.
  2. Remove the chicken from the water. Then place the onion in the water. You can chop up the onion if you like.
  3. Add the carrots, celery and chicken stock in the water and cook for 10 minutes.
  4. De-bone the chicken by pulling the meat off of the bone.
  5. Add the chicken and noodles to the soup for 10 minutes or until the noodles are fully cooked. Then salt and taste to your liking.
  6. enjoy.
