I know you guys love Mexican meat. It's pretty obvious because you keep getting caught trying to smuggle it across the border from Juarez. In the case of a 20-year-old United States citizen who lives in El Paso, he didn't even try to hide it that well. He tried to make it across the border with what a Customs and Border Protection officer thought was meat products hidden in the back of his vehicle. When he gave the officer what is called a negative declaration for meat, yikes, the officer decided to send him on ahead for a secondary inspection for meat.

Sure enough, there was meat. About 320 pounds of pork bologna and 30 pounds of turkey ham. Seriously, man, turkey ham? That's not even ham, man. That's turkey that someone tarts up to fool people into thinking it's ham. Now the pork bologna I can understand. I do love me some Mexican bologna but I know better than to try and smuggle it across the border in my car.

So what was our 20-year-old would-be Mexican meat smuggler going to do with all that pork and turkey? He told officers that he was going to resell it here in the United States. Not only did the guy get a $1,000 civil penalty, he also got his meat seized and destroyed by CBP. Not the bologna, not the bologna!

Alas, there is a good reason why you should eat your Mexican meat across the border. CBP says the recent detection of the African Swine Fever in the Dominican Republic makes it "important that no pork products are brought into the U.S.” They could actually "introduce foreign animal diseases that can be detrimental to our agriculture industry.” Sounds pretty unappetizing. So there you have it. If you're craving some Mexican bologna, don't try to make a run for the border with it.
