With an avalanche of great items for sale descending on News Talk 940 burying anyone listening under a mountain of great deals, The Erwin Pawn Trade-A-Thon brought it all together.

We do it every Saturday morning from 9 to Noon.  For the uninitiated, it couldn't be more simpler or easy to understand and certainly provides a "nothing to lose, everything to gain" opportunity for anyone that has stuff they no longer want but still has value to call in and advertise their inventory on the radio.  The best part?  It's totally free to call in and list your items. Trade-A-Tho n is basically a public service provided by KIXZ, Erwin Pawn, and Town Square Media.

THE BIG QUESTION

When we take a call on the show we ask for an answer to a poll, which we call the Big Question.  Sometimes topical and other times it's a choice between two answers.  I went with a different angle for this edition of the show.

I'm a heavy reader, especially American history.  Recently on my personal Facebook page I posted I had just completed an 800+ page history of WW2 and how of the handful of books I've read about that war, the one I just completed was far and away the best.

I didn't get a single like or comment.  I was a little discouraged.  I began to ponder if any of my Facebook friends had read anything other than a restaurant menu in 2016.  I also thought about Trade-A-Thon and if you were reading and what you read in 2016 that stood out.

Have you read a book this year?

No 6

Yes 21

Among our readers we had several cite the bible, self-help, non-fiction, military history, historical fiction, and even romance novels were all mentioned twice.

I  made a list of books I enjoyed in 2016.  Here is where my head has been the first half of the year.  I highly recommend these titles if the subject matter is of any interest to you and there are four I recommend you read, even if you aren't that interested in the subject.

THE SECOND WORLD WAR – MARTIN GILBERT -

THE MORAL CASE FOR FOSSIL FUELS – ALEX EPSTEIN

THE PENGUIN HISTORY OF THE WORLD – J.M. ROBERTS

THE FOUNDERS SECOND AMENDMENT – STEPHEN P HALBROOK

These were pretty good reads too, however if the topic doesn't interest you much these might not appeal to you.

PLASTIC, A TOXIC LOVE STORY – SUSAN FREINKEL

THE SUBSTANCE OF CIVILIZATION – STEPHEN L SASS

SIXTY MILES OF BORDER – TERRY KIRKPATRICK

LIBERTY, THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION – THOMAS FLEMING

THE GREAT BRIDGE – DAVID MCCULLOUGH

THE ISLAND OF KNOWLEDGE – MARCELO GLEISER

RARE, THE HIGH STAKES RACE TO SATISFY OUR NEED FOR THE SCARCEST METALS ON EARTH – KEITH VERONESE

SAPIENS, A BREIF HISTORY OF HUMANKIND – YUVAL NOAH HARARI

THE RISE AND FALL OF ANCIENT EGYPT – TOBY WILKINSON

THE GREAT RAILROAD REVOLUTION – CHRISTIAN WOLMAR

ATOMIC AWAKENING, A NEW LOOK AT THE HISTORY AND FUTURE OF NUCLEAR POWER – JAMES MAHAFFEY

Rule #6

At the beginning of each hour on the show we start off by reciting the official rules of The Erwin Pawn Trade-A-Thon.  We do it to educate the newbies and refresh the memories of our frequent callers.

There are five standard rules and then I bring you a special Rule #6.  It changes every week.  Sometimes the rule is inspired by something that happended to me over the previous week or an insightful thought I had on any given subject.

Looking at KIXZ's followers on Facebook would leave you with the impression our listeners haven't adopted Facebook at the rate of our sister stations.  As more of you finally take the plunge, more of you are taking selfies.  This is a picture of yourself, taken by you.  Unfortunately many of your selfies are a bit unflattering.  There are tips for shooting selfies and two of them really stand out.

Rule #6: When taking a selfie tilt your head slightly and hold the camera higher than your head.

Tilting your head highlights your cheek bones and eyes.  Taking the picture with the camera higher than your head minimizes wrinkles and skin sag.

If you are recently new to Facebook or been on awhile and looking to boost your friends list, I invite you to friend me.  Search for "James Guthrie" and you should find me easily.  There are 14 year old girls with more friends and followers than me, let's be friends.

Thanks for listening to Trade-A-Thon, we're in your debt if you've ever called and we promise, you'll find plenty to like about The Erwin Pawn Trade-A-Thon, Saturday's 9-Noon on KIXZ.
