Senator Cornyn Will Not Object To Electoral College Certification

U.S. Senator John Cornyn is splitting from some of his Republican colleagues by announcing he will not vote to object to certifying the results of the Electoral College.

As KFYO has previously reported, Senator Ted Cruz of Texas along with at least 11 other Republican Senators plan to object to the certification of the Electoral College results on Wednesday.

KFYO has also reported that Congressman Jodey Arrington of District 19 in Texas and Congressman Ronny Jackson of District 13 will join with other Republican lawmakers in objecting to the results.

According to the Texas Tribune, Cornyn announced his plans in a lengthy letter to Texas voters. Cornyn told Texans that unless new evidence is brought up, he could not vote to object.

"As a former judge, I view this process with the same impartial, evidence-based decision-making as I did my job on the bench,” wrote Cornyn, a former justice on the Texas Supreme Court. “So, unless substantial, new evidence is presented during the challenges to each state’s ballots, I will not object to the certification of that stave’s election results based on unproven allegations.”

Senator Ted Cruz has called for an audit of the election results in question and told radio host Mark Levin that he would press for the appointment of an electoral commission.

According to the Texas Tribune, Cornyn did not embrace the idea of an audit but did support the idea of an election review.

In his letter, Cornyn made clear he was not a fan of Cruz's audit proposal, which Cruz has said can be done in the 10 days before the inauguration. Cornyn suggested he too supports a review of election issues but something less hasty and more deliberate, such as an "independent commission" in the vein of the Commission on Federal Election Reform. That was a private bipartisan panel that looked into problems with the 2000 and 2004 elections.

"As to timing and practicality of an emergency audit, I am much more dubious," Cornyn said. "The design of the proposed commission to conduct such an 'audit' will inevitably fail."

Congressman Ronny Jackson is scheduled to appear on Wednesday's edition of The Chad Hasty Show at 9:05 a.m. to explain his reasoning for objecting to the results. Congressman Jodey Arrington will join The Chad Hasty Show on Thursday at 8:45 a.m.
