Route 66 is something we are so lucky to have run through Amarillo. The history so rich, the memories made even now are timeless, and to this day is still one of the most traveled to destinations...or should I traveled through.

It is something that is constantly celebrated, as it should be, and the one thing we tend to forget is that it's not just Amarillo that is lucky enough to have Route 66 and its rich history running through it.

Route 66 Centennial Celebration

This year, Route 66 turned a stunning 100 years old. Dating all the way back to 1926, it was THE main thoroughfare when taking road trips. Route 66 could lead you anywhere, and it still can, just a bit slower.

With it turning 100 years old, the Route 66 Centennial celebration is going on through May 3rd, and there have been some fun events that have taken place along the way...and even when those events aren't in Amarillo, we are still somehow involved in them.

Big Texan Eating Contest

The Route 66 Fan Fest took place in Springfield, Missouri, yesterday, and Amarillo's own The Big Texan was directly involved in one of the keystone events. Yes, it was a big steak-eating challenge that included a professional eater and members of the Missouri State football team.

They got the normal steak challenge meal and went to work. Who won the competition? How about the Missouri State football team! There were four of them competing, each one with their own meal, and they put it down to take the crown. Impressive for sure. The celebration continues through the weekend.

Look at How Amarillo's Old Route 66 Motels Looked Then & Now

The heyday of the Mother Road may be long gone, but would you believe that there's still plenty of the old motels where many a weary American family rested their heads during their interstate travels?

You won't believe some of these are still standing, much less still alive and (wait for it..) kickin'!
