Food trucks have quickly been becoming the rage here in Amarillo, and with good reason. Property prices are skyrocketing, so setting up a brick and mortar location for a restaurant just isn't as cost efficient as it used to be.

Heck, even chain restaurants are shutting down locations all over the place to save some money. However, the food truck that's set to take flight this weekend isn't your typical food truck.

St. Anthony Legacy and Redevelopment Corp. and Square Mile Community Development decided to come together for an incredibly good idea that will go a long way in helping the community out. They will be sending out Amarillo's first mobile market.

So what exactly is it? It's essentially a healthy grocery store on wheels, and they'll be targeting areas in the city that are considered "food deserts". A food desert is an defined as an urban area in which its difficult to buy affordable or good quality fresh food.

With the truck, they want to be able to bring out fresh and healthy produce to areas that don't typically have that available to them. One area they have targeted are parts of Potter County, which has been very low on the health index and in serious need of healthier food options.

Square Mile Community Development Program Director Donna Doorman told our partners, KAMR Local 4, "the goal with this mobile market is to take fresh and healthy produce to communities that have food desert that are food deserts, or that have limited access to fresh and healthy produce, as well as shelf stable items.”

The truck made its first appearance on Sunday, April 14 and they plan on continuing to send it out to the areas in the city that need it most.
