The one thing about the Amarillo area is that things are always changing. When I first got my license, the known fact was that we could get anywhere in Amarillo in about ten minutes.

The 10-Minute Rule: A Relic of Old Amarillo

It didn't matter if you were traveling from Georgia Street to Soncy or heading the other way to Grand Street. You may have been heading to Westgate Mall or to Dick Bivins; all you knew was that you were going to need about ten minutes to get there. With our city growing and adding new businesses, neighborhoods, and schools, things were bound to change.

That guaranteed ten-minute guideline had to change, too. Sure, there are still some places that you can get from point A to point B in those ten minutes. The safer rule is to know about traffic, lights, construction, and just the growth of our city in general, which would not necessarily be the gold standard anymore.

The New Reality: Why 15 Minutes is the New Gold Standard

Amarillo has gone from the ten-minute rule to a safer fifteen-minute window. That extra five minutes is genuinely needed to get anywhere. Yes, I do know that for a fact, given how much food I deliver on a daily basis.

Navigating the "Commuter's Cross": I-40 and I-27 Challenges

We have the sometimes time-saving "cross of the city" if you haven't heard it called that before. I am referring to the two major interstates in our area: I-40 and I-27. The "commuter's cross" we can call it.

Growing Pains: How Progress Affects Your Daily Drive

It can save us some time unless those are the ones under construction. We all know that I-27 has been an ever-changing mess of cones and new patterns for some time now. That one-way drive could extend our commute even longer on a bad day.

Looking Ahead: Avoiding the 20-Minute "Dallas" Reality

All of that could and has even pushed the limits and shown us the first signs of a "20-minute" reality. You know how much of an eternity that seems to some of us, lifelong Amarillo residents.

This is the type of commute, or longer, you expect in a big city like Dallas, where getting anywhere is a journey. We are not the ones who like an even longer commute. We only expect something like that if we are heading out of our own city to maybe Canyon.

It's a reality we may have to welcome someday. We will embrace the fifteen-minute commute as we stand. I know with progress and growth, some conveniences will have to be sacrificed. Just let's hope it's not anytime soon.
