Dumas Man Sells Picnic Tables in Amarillo For Medical Bills

Driving around Amarillo its important to pay attention to your surroundings. You can meet a lot of great people and find some stories that way. Those stories can really help get the word out and help someone in Amarillo out.

That is what recently happened down Soncy Street. This is something that every time we drive in the area, my daughter keeps an eye out for this guy. He sits in the Home Depot parking lot near the sidewalk.

Spotting Kindness Along Soncy Road

His name is Sanford Waters, and he has a story. Sanford lives in Dumas and travels to Amarillo to go to the doctor. Those medical trips also bring him over to Soncy Road, where he sets up to sell unique, handcrafted condiment holders shaped like miniature picnic tables.

Those items are condiment holders in the shape of picnic tables. They are really cute and catch the eye of a lot of people. The sales of these items go to help both his mounting medical expenses and also to help with his recent vehicle problems.

Who Is Sanford Waters? The Man Behind the Picnic Tables

He makes these picnic tables because he doesn't want to ask for a handout; he loves to have something to offer. The thing that I love about Amarillo is that his story is out there and people are buying his stuff. They also just want to help him.

To be honest, I’m not really too sure about this situation but I have seen this older man baking in the hot sun on Soncy by the Home Depot. I pull in and watch, and he has a little sign out that said something like “Need Help Don’t Know How to Ask”. I spoke with him and he is drowning in medical expenses and truck problems.

His story is getting out there, and that is great. Helping a nice guy from our area who is just trying to get by.

He doesn't only make picnic tables. According to Annie Wortham, who ended up with this nice planter, Sanford is very deserving of all the love he's receiving. That is always great to hear.

Pride, Hard Work, and Refusing Handouts

I met sweet Sanford one day on my way to work, he was selling some wood work items he made and I was drawn to his sweet smile. I stopped and asked what he was selling and why. He shared with me he needed help paying medical bills and he wasn’t a beggar and was going to work hard to make some extra money. I stopped several times and have since struck up a little friendship with him! He has the sweetest heart and kind smile, he even told me when I dropped off a chair for him that he didn’t want to sit down because he didn’t want people to think he was lazy!
