These Two Small Towns In Texas That Are Perfect For Peacock Lovers

There's something special about living in a small rural town in Texas. There's usually a strong sense of community, neighbors help each other out, and you will usually find something quirky and unique that makes the town extra special. For some reason, peacocks seem to be drawn to small rural Texas towns.

The Peacocks Of Nordheim, Texas

I recently came across a video on YouTube claiming to be footage of spooky and forgotten towns. The towns were neither spooky nor forgotten. They're just small rural towns with populations under 500. The only thing spooky happening in a town like that is the outsider riding around with a camera filming stuff.

Nordheim was featured in the video, and it reminded me a lot of a town I grew up around. There isn't much going on. Traffic is non-existent. The busiest place in town is a bar and grill with three trucks parked out front. After driving in city traffic on my way to work this morning, that sounds like heaven. There was one thing that stood out to me, though. The two peacocks hanging out in a yard.

In the video there are two peacocks spotted just hanging out in front of what looks to be an abandoned house. They're completely unbothered by the vehicle pulling up to take a look. Where did they come from? Why are they hanging out in Nordheim? Are they pets or just random peacocks that were traveling through and decided to settle down?

On the opposite end of Texas, you have Canyon. The town is home to West Texas A&M University and offers a lot of small-town charm. Head to the square and you'll swear you fell in a hole and landed in a Gilmore Girls episode. I've always enjoyed hanging out in Canyon. The same can probably be said for Kevin.

Kevin is the self-proclaimed world-famous peacock that calls Canyon, Texas home. He even has his own social media presence and people are constantly sharing photos and videos of Kevin hanging out in driveways, walking down the road, or taking a break on a porch somewhere.

What is it about small Texas towns that appeals to peacocks? Is it the slower-paced lifestyle compared to the big city? Maybe it's the lack of a zoo. No zoo means nowhere to lock the peacock up, and they can wander around willy-nilly scaring dogs at their leisure. Whatever the reason, rural Texans love their peacocks and it seems their peacocks love them back.
