Another Pedestrian Fighting For Their Life

News reports are coming out about another incident where a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. That person was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries.

This is far from the only story recently of a driver hitting a pedestrian. What the hell is going on in Amarillo?

Is It Always This Bad, Or Is 2022 Different?

It seems like 2022 is different. I don't remember seeing this many stories, this frequently, about pedestrians being hit.

It isn't just in one part of town either.

There was the story of Lloyd McMaster. There have been numerous other stories as well, including a man who was running cross country hope to bring awareness to those of us impacted by the pandemic. His story ended tragically in Yellow City.

Blame For Pedestrians And Drivers Alike

In some instances, the driver is to blame. Some of those even turn into hit-and-run situations with police still looking for suspects.

In some cases, pedestrians were where they shouldn't be or walked out into traffic.

This really shouldn't be as big an issue as it seems to be right now in Amarillo. It isn't hard as a pedestrian to use common sense and to make sure streets are safe to cross.

As a driver, it isn't that hard to drive without distractions. Most vehicles now have the ability to let you operate your phone hands free, if you have to. In those instances where your car doesn't have the latest in hands free tech, it isn't hard to wait until it is safe to check your phone.

I point to the phone, because it seems to be the biggest issue. Last year, I had to take the Texas tests to get a driver's license. They made me watch three movies, and all of them dealt with texting while driving. That's a big difference from when I was 16. Back then drinking and driving was the major focus.

We Can Be Better

It isn't hard. When you're out and about, be aware. Don't drive with your eyes off the road. If you're walking, running, jogging, whatever; pay attention to what is going on around you. You've heard of defensive driving. Defensive strolling might not be a bad idea either.

There have been too many avoidable tragedies this year. Let's do better.
