The DPS is investigating a two vehicle collision Monday on US-385 in Deaf Smith County Monday morning.

A 2005 Mack truck-tractor towing a semi-trailer northbound on US-385 about a mile north of Hereford was legally stopped in the road, which was a construction zone, by road crew personnel.

A 2016 Ford F-150 pickup truck being driven by 51-year-old Maxwell Middleton of Hereford was approaching the semi truck and trailer and failed to stop for unknown reasons.  He crashed into the back of the trailer.

Middleton was transported to Hereford Regional Medical Center where he later died.  The driver of the 18-wheeler was also transported to Hereford Regional Medical Center and was treated and released.  Neither man was wearing a seat belt.

The DPS and other emergency vehicles responded to the scene.  Authorities are still trying to determine what factors led to the accident.

Hereford Regional Medical Center is the Deaf Smith County Hospital.
