GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas (AP) — A teenage gunman is dead and two suburban Dallas police officers wounded following an exchange of gunfire on Christmas Day that began with a traffic stop.

The unidentified 16-year-old was shot Wednesday afternoon in a volley of gunfire with Grand Prairie police. The officers sustained superficial wounds and were later released from a hospital.

The teen died shortly after being taken into surgery. Police say he was from Mansfield, about 30 miles southwest of Dallas.

They say the sequence of events began early Wednesday morning when the teen fled from police trying to stop his vehicle. He eventually ran from his car, exchanged gunfire with the pursuing officer, and fled into nearby woods.

Police found him about nine hours later, leading to the gunfire that left the teen mortally wounded.
