This might come as a shock. Not that Google is shutting down Google+, but that it exists at all. I honestly forgot about it until I got an email informing me that the end is near.

Google decided to join the fray and try to topple Facebook with their own social media service. I remember when it launched and people were calling it a Facebook killer.

Fast forward to December 2018, and those individuals couldn't have been more wrong. Google announced they were shutting down their social media service, Google+, in 2019.

Today an email went out informing everyone that the shutdown was going to actually take place, and that you have until April to save your photos and videos that you posted to Google+.

I don't remember signing up for it, honestly. I know that I never used it afterwards, and I'm not alone. The email stated that the shutdown was due to the fact that no one was actually using the service.

In December 2018, we announced our decision to shut down Google+ for consumers in April 2019 due to low usage and challenges involved in maintaining a successful product that meets consumers' expectations. We want to thank you for being part of Google+ and provide next steps, including how to download your photos and other content.

I never really figured out how I was supposed to use it. It didn't seem as intuitive as Facebook or Twitter. I didn't know anyone who used it that I could ask for pointers.

It is sad in a way. Facebook, unfortunately, still reigns supreme when it comes to "social media." Even with all of the bad news we've received regarding Facebook over the past several years, it still sits as king of the mountain.

On the off chance that you actually use Google+, they have included details on how to download your content. You must do so before April of this year.
