We were all hoping it wouldn't happen, but weren't surprised when the announcement was made. After just days back at school, the Canyon Independent School District has announced a confirmed Covid-19 exposure at Reeves-Hinger Elementary. A news release issued by the school district did not provide detail on the extent of the exposure, but did say that the infected areas of the school have been deeply cleaned.

With all the social distancing and mask policies in place, the district feels there is a minimal risk of close-contact exposure between students and teachers. Due to this minimal risk, instruction will continue on the school's campus. Canyon ISD protocols require face masks for students and teachers, as well as any other staff in the schools. Social distancing is also encouraged as much as possible and is conducted throughout school buildings.

Canyon ISD is asking all parents to closely monitor their children for symptoms which could be Covid-19:

  • Feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 100.0 degrees F.
  • Loss of taste or smell
  • Cough
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Headache
  • Chills
  • Sore throat
  • Congestion or runny nose
  • Shaking or exaggerated shivering
  • Significant muscle pain or ache
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea or vomiting

During the pandemic, close contact is defined as being within six feet of an infected person for a period of 15 minutes, while not wearing a mask; or being directly exposed to infectious secretions, such as a cough or sneeze.
