When a major natural disaster hits, we all ask ourselves how we can help. Here in the Texas panhandle, we are blessed with some of the most giving people I have ever met. So it was not surprise when people started asking me how we can help those hit hardest by Hurricane Laura. It is important that when we feel the call to give, that we make sure the money and supplies go to the places and organizations that need it most. Sadly, there is no shortage of shady folks claiming to help the victims. That is why I have put together a list of reputable groups and organizations that will make sure your donations go to the right people.

AMERICAN RED CROSS

  • The Red Cross is the go to organization when it comes to disaster relief. You know when you donate here, your money will go where it is needed. You can donate online at redcross.org, by calling 800-RED-CROSS, or by texting LAURA to 90999 to make a $10 donation. They are asking for money only and not supplies at this time.

THE CAJUN NAVY

  • You may remember them from Hurricanes Katrina and Harvey. They are a non-profit citizen-led organization dedicated to saving lives during natural disasters. Teams have boots on the ground all over the U.S. Gulf coast to help rescue those affected by Hurricane Laura. Information is available on the Cajun Navy's website to request or donate supplies and donate financially, as well as sign up to be a volunteer. The Cajun Navy is in immediate need of PPE, water, ice, non-perishable food, gasoline gift cards, clothing, cleaning supplies, kids' toys and generators.

GLOBALGIVING'S HURRICANE LAURA RELIEF FUND

  • GlobalGiving, a crowdfunding community, has started a disaster relief fund to provide those in need with food, water and medicine. The fund will also support communities and first responders affected by Hurricane Laura. The organization has a goal of $3 million and is now accepting donations.

Just remember before you give to any organization, do some research. For every person out there that is truly trying to help others, there are those that are trying to scam us.
