2nd Navy Seal Pleads Guilty in Death of Logan Melgar

Another member of Navy Seal Team 6 has pleaded guilty for their involvement in the death of Army Staff Sergeant Logan Melgar.

Logan Melgar was a 34-year-old Lubbock native and a graduate of Frenship High School. After graduating in 2001 he later enlisted in the Army in 2012 and worked to become a U.S. Army Green Beret Staff Sergeant.

According to ABC News, while deployed to Bamako, Mali, back in 2017 on a counter-terrorism mission, Melgar died on June 4th during a hazing incident that involved Chief Special Warfare Operator Tony DeDolph putting him in a fatal chokehold.

During court proceedings, prosecutors alleged that Melgar was specifically targeted for hazing the night of June 4th. Prosecutors say that 2 Marines and 2 Navy Seals broke into Melgar’s room, tied him down with duct tape, and at one point he was put into a chokehold by DeDolph.

The Washington Post reported that the hazing of Melgar was due to an incident in which Melgar left some soldiers behind in traffic on the way to a party at the French Embassy in Bamako.

According to the Daily Beast, DeDolph is pleading guilty to involuntary manslaughter, hazing, and obstruction of justice. In 2019, Seal Team 6 Petty Officer Adam Matthews was sentenced to 1 year in prison for his role in the hazing incident, and Staff Sergeant Kevin Maxwell was sentenced to 4 years.

A court martial for DeDolph has been scheduled for January 14th.
