How would you like to be given $500 a month just because of where you live? The guaranteed income program has spread among major cities in the United States, and now select families in Harris County will be able to cash in.

The program is called "Uplift Harris" and local officials hope that it will address poverty in Harris County. Money for the program is coming from the federal American Rescue Plan and will cost $20.5 million dollars according to the Houston Chronicle. Each family participating will get $500 a month for 18 months.

The plan still has to be approved by Harris County Commissioners but it's likely to pass. According to the Houston Chronicle, 1,500 families that live 200 percent below the federal poverty line.

According to Precinct 1 Commissioner Rodney Ellis, up to 1,500 families living 200 percent below the federal poverty line, particularly a household with a total of $60,000 for a family of four and $29,000 for a single individual, are eligible to apply for the program set to start around September.

In the Monday press conference, Harris County Public Health Director Barbie Robinson noted the money distribution would happen in two cohorts. The first is randomly selecting 1,200 families in the county's poorest areas and then selecting 200 to 400 families in the department's ACCESS program, which services vulnerable residents in need.

No word on what happens to the program after the federal money runs out. The program could be left up to local taxpayers to fund.
