From Sopapillas to Gorditas: St. Matthew’s Fundraiser Returns in Amarillo
There is something about the church fundraiser in Amarillo that I just love. I mean, it's the community coming together to help out a parish in their community. The families of the church spend time working on the event that helps bring money in.
A Longtime Amarillo Fundraising Tradition
It's a win-win. It can be a spaghetti dinner, a German sausage meal, or even a potluck that brings the people of the church and the community together. It's a day of fellowship and fun.
St. Matthew's Methodist Church at 1631 S Roberts is no stranger to this. Like many churches in Amarillo, they have the occasional fundraiser to help with things they need throughout the year.
From Fair Booth to Church Kitchen
It used to be that they were famous for having a much-loved booth out at the Tri-State Fair that had the most delicious stuffed sopapillas. For many years, they would be out serving the community with this great food and that famous salsa.
They stopped going out to the fair around the same time as COVID hit. That did not stop the sopapillas from flowing. No, they started having them a few times a year out at their church location. It took a lot less manpower to have a fundraiser for a few hours than the several days of coverage at the fair.

The Sopapilla Legacy Lives On
They are about to have their final fundraiser for the year, and they are switching it up on us. Oh, but it's not a bad switch-up. Instead of the sopapillas, this time they are going to try a new dish. Don't worry, the sopapillas will be back.
What’s on the Menu This Time
This time, the plates will consist of two gorditas, rice, and beans. You will also get a bottle of water for just $14. Kids' plates are just $7.
