Dasher Diary: Safety Feature I Unexpectedly Learned About Recently in Amarillo, Texas
Even though I have been delivering food in Amarillo for almost two years there are still things that pop up that are new. Even to a seasoned delivery driver. When they pop up it sometimes can throw you for a loop.
I was finishing my last delivery of the night and then I was about to go home. I picked up the food from Five Guys and then I was dropping it off at a local hotel towards Rick Husband International Airport.
In my head, I was concentrating on everything I had to get done once I got home. My evening of work was almost done. I arrived to the hotel and parked. I went to grab the food out of my trunk. There was a bag of food and a bag of drinks.
While I was getting everything situated I put my phone under my neck so I could grab everything and shut my trunk. What could go wrong? I mean, you wouldn't expect anything could.
I walked into the hotel and located the sign for the elevator. I stopped for a second to admire that "The Goonies" was playing on the TV. As I approached the elevator my phone started blaring. Oh, and my ringtone was rather loud and annoying. Which is why I usually keep my ringer on silent.
I look at the phone and ADT Security is calling me. I look at my text messages to make sure I don't have an alarm signal at my home. I don't. Heck, it's not even ADT that I use. So I was confused.
I answered and the lady on the other end was a little frantic wanting to make sure I was ok. I was ok but confused as to what was going on. Apparently, ADT is the security system that partners with DoorDash and I triggered the emergency alert feature.
I somehow let them know that I was in distress and needed emergency help. I did not. I can only imagine that when I placed the phone under my neck my chin unfortunately hit the little trigger button. That is all I can imagine.
Oh, and since I was explaining to the lady that I was ok, we got disconnected because I was on the elevator still heading to the customer's dropoff location. As I exited the elevator and was outside the customer's hotel room door the phone started blaring again. I hurriedly answered and took the drop-off photo that was required by DoorDash.
I again, was successful at convincing the ADT operator that I was just fine. She did go on to tell me, after being quite thrilled that it was a neck dial, that anytime I feel unsafe on a delivery all I have to do is call. Usually,
I call my daughter but I can call ADT and they will stay on the phone with me.
I am glad that it was a false alarm, as was my ADT representative, I am thankful that this is a feature that I have when I am out delivering. Help is only a push of the button away. I am thankful for that.
