One of the most debated issues in the 2025 Texas legislative session is the fate of THC in the Lone Star State. One bill has become the centerpiece of the debate, Senate Bill 3. On May 21, 2025, SB3 passed in the Texas House of Representatives.

The bill will now go to the Governor's desk, where it will await Abbott's signature to become law. The reaction to the bill's passing has been swift across Texas.

What Happens Now That Senate Bill 3 Has Passed In Texas

Senate Bill 3, in case you somehow magically forgot, is the bill pushed by Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick that would ban all THC products in Texas. There have been attempts to amend the bill to allow for hemp beverages and to impose stricter regulations instead of an outright ban.

According to reports, the version of the bill that passed is the version that includes a full ban on THC products. This is despite attempts from representatives like Rep. King from the Texas panhandle to amend the bill to introduce tighter regulations rather than the ban.

This is a major blow to an $8 billion industry in Texas. Representatives Smithee and Fairly from the Amarillo area both voted in favor of the bill.

The bill still allows for TCUP, the Texas Compassionate Use Program, to operate in the state.

The War Over THC In Texas Is Far From Over

As soon as word came out that the bill had passed, it was announced on social media that preparations were beginning for lawsuits. Supposedly, the Texas Hemp Business Council is already planning its next move.

Reactions To The Passing Of Senate Bill 3 In Texas

It's hard to find many people who are excited about the passing of Senate Bill 3. Those who say it's good celebrate the fact that these products will be kept out of the hands of children. They also claim these products are toxic and dangerous to adults.

Opponents bring up issues like personal freedom. Veterans groups have been against this bill, saying that THC products help with issues like chronic pain and PTSD. Of course, the small business owners and their employees who make a living with these products have been against this bill from day one for obvious reasons.

Now, Texas waits to see what happens once this bill reaches the Governor's desk.
