When it comes to getting out and enjoying the great outdoors near Amarillo, Texas, everyone immediately thinks about Palo Duro Canyon. It's beautiful, and it is the second biggest canyon in the U.S.

It's not the only option you have, though. There are a lot of great places to go to enjoy some sunshine and nature. Here are some places near Amarillo to keep in mind for your next day out.

Head To Caprock Canyon Near Amarillo For Camping, Hiking, And Bison

The first trip my kids and I took to Caprock Canyon State Park was one that my kids loved. It's a nice park with plenty to do, and the views are insanely beautiful.

When you first pull into the park, there's a good chance the first thing you'll see is part of the official Texas State Bison Herd. My kids lost their minds watching the bison as we made our way into the park.

There's an area for swimming, a decent playground, plenty of hiking trails, and the camping areas offer unique views to wake up to. If you're looking for something out of the ordinary in the panhandle, this is my family's go-to.

Cool Off In The Home Of A Texas Panhandle Lake Monster: Lake Meredith

Lake Meredith is another spot my family and I can't get enough of. In the summer, it's my kids' favorite place to swim. We'll spend whole weekends camping and swimming, and they love it.

The best parts, for me, are the camping and the proximity to Fritch, Texas. Camping is first-come, first-served and free, aside from some RV camping spots. Our favorite spot is on the northwest side of the lake. It has beautiful views at sunrise and sunset, and overlooks the lake.

Being close to Fritch is a lifesaver. If you need any supplies, you can go into town and stock up, and then head back to camp or to swim. There have been several times we needed something, and were able to find it in town.

Lake Meredith is also home to the legendary monster fish named Meredith Mike. Bounties have been put on this fish that some claim is a big as a school bus. There's even a festival in its honor.

Alibates Flint Quarries Offers A Glimpse Into The Past In The Texas Panhandle

Alibates Flint Quarries National Monument offers something special for those who like a dash of history with their nature. It is the site where this unique flint was gathered for making tools and weapons thousands of years ago.

You can take a guided tour of the quarries, which is the only way to access them. There's a visitor center that is complete with museum exhibits and tons of information. If you love history, this is a great way to get out and spend an afternoon.
